The 2025 Professor Akin Oyebode Cup burst into life in emphatic fashion as the refurbished Ikole Township Stadium played host to a breathtaking opening day that produced an astonishing 21 goals from just four matches.
Home supporters were treated to a dream start as the Ikole LFC youth team announced their title ambitions with a ruthless 5–0 demolition of the Moba LFC youth side. The standout performance of the day, however, came from the Irepodun/Ifelodun LFC youth team, who delivered a devastating attacking display to overwhelm Ilejemeje LFC youth team 7–0 in one of the most dominant wins in the competition’s history.
Gbonyin/Aiyekire LFC youth team also joined the goal rush, brushing aside Emure LFC youth team with an emphatic 5–0 victory to underline their own credentials.
The only contest that escaped the trend of one-sided encounters was the tournament opener, where Ido/Osi LFC and Ekiti East LFC youth teams served up an entertaining 2–2 draw, setting the tone for an exciting day of football.
The prestigious tournament, sponsored by the family of renowned legal scholar Professor Akin Oyebode, continues to serve as a vital platform for discovering and nurturing young football talents across Ekiti State’s local government areas. This year’s edition is being staged entirely at the newly upgraded Ikole Township Stadium, further enhancing the competition’s appeal.
The opening ceremony was officially performed by the Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area, Hon. Bayo Omojola. Also in attendance were the Chairperson of Ikole West LCDA, Hon. Mosun Adeyemo, and the Secretary to the Ikole LGA, Mrs. Adenike Adebowale, adding colour and prestige to the occasion.
Fans who could not make it to the stadium can still follow every kick and goal in real time through the tournament’s tech partner, SofaScore, which provides live scores and updates online.
Attention now shifts to Matchday Two, where defending champions Oye LFC youth team are set to make their long-awaited debut alongside tournament heavyweights Ado LFC youth team and Ikere LFC youth team.
With the explosive goal-scoring form already on display, expectations are high for more thrilling encounters as the race for the 2025 crown gathers momentum.
