Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi could miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 after sustaining a serious ankle injury during his side’s 2–1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
According to Morocco World News, Hakimi is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, dealing a major blow to both PSG and the Moroccan national team ahead of a crucial period in the football calendar.
Spanish newspaper AS revealed that medical examinations confirmed a syndesmosis rupture—a tear between the tibia and fibula in the lower leg—alongside minor damage to the deltoid ligament in his left ankle.
The 26-year-old full-back will begin his recovery with two weeks of immobilization, followed by four to six weeks of intensive rehabilitation. Fortunately, reports from Marca indicate that Hakimi will not require surgery, raising cautious optimism that his recovery could be quicker than initially feared.
The injury occurred after a strong challenge from Bayern’s Luis Díaz, forcing Hakimi to limp off the pitch visibly in pain and tears just before halftime. He was later spotted leaving the stadium on crutches, wearing a protective walking boot.
French and Spanish media have confirmed that the Moroccan star will miss the remainder of PSG’s 2025 fixtures, including key Ligue 1 and Champions League matches. With AFCON 2025 set to kick off on December 21 in Morocco, his participation is now in serious doubt.
The news has sent shockwaves through both PSG’s fanbase and Moroccan football circles, as Hakimi is widely regarded as one of the team’s most vital players—renowned for his pace, defensive solidity, and attacking contribution from the right flank.
If he fails to recover in time, Morocco head coach Walid Regragui may face a selection headache, particularly for the Atlas Lions’ early group-stage matches on home soil.
Despite the setback, PSG’s medical team remains hopeful that Hakimi’s non-surgical treatment and youthful resilience will enable a return sooner than expected. Both PSG and the Moroccan Football Federation are closely monitoring his progress.
For now, Hakimi’s AFCON participation hangs in the balance, as one of Africa’s brightest stars battles against time to be fit for his country’s quest for continental glory on home turf.
