Senegal failed to defend their title at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but earned third place following a 4-2 penalty kick shootout victory over Sudan after a 1-1 draw through ninety minutes in Kampala, Uganda.
The match was evenly contested throughout, with each team enjoying stretches of strong play.
Sudan took the lead inside six minutes when awful marking from the Senegalese defense left towering striker Mohamed Teya wide open to head in Abdel Raouf’s corner kick from six yards out.
The 2022 champions responded well, dominating the majority of the first half. A flurry of opportunities arrived before halftime, with Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed Elnour doing well to save at his near post from Oumar Ba’s sliding effort.
Senegal continued to push after halftime and were rewarded around the hour mark when Ousseynou Seck’s cross from the right wing found the head of Mbaye Ndiaye, who looped his header over the head of Elnour.
Both teams had opportunities in the final half hour but remained level, leading to a penalty shootout. Senegal converted all four of their attempts, while Sudan missed two penalties, including the opening spot kick by Walieldin Khidir.
The final will take place on Saturday (15:00 GMT) when Morocco faces Madagascar in Nairobi, Kenya.
