The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has asked Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step down from their positions with immediate effect.

The federation announced the decision in a brief statement published on its official X account, bringing an end to Madugu’s tenure following a disappointing run of results for the nine-time African champions.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF stated.

The decision comes in the aftermath of Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons entered the tournament as defending champions but suffered a shock 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon, bringing their title defence to an early end.

Nigeria’s disappointment was compounded by their failure to secure a route into the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Following their WAFCON elimination, the Super Falcons faced South Africa in a crucial fixture for a place in the inter-confederation playoff pathway but suffered a 2-1 defeat, ending their hopes of qualifying through that route.

Madugu had come under increasing pressure following the team’s performances and results during the tournament, with the NFF now opting for a complete change in the technical leadership of the national team.

The federation has yet to announce a replacement for Madugu or reveal who will take charge of the Super Falcons on an interim or permanent basis.

The NFF’s next appointment will be closely watched as Nigeria looks to rebuild the team and restore the Super Falcons to the top of African women’s football.
