In a thrilling semifinal match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Morocco’s Atlas Lions emerged victorious over defending champions Senegal in a penalty shootout.
After a 1-1 draw in regular time, Morocco won the shootout 5-3, showcasing their composure and skill under pressure.
The match was a closely contested tactical battle, with Senegal opting to counter-attack while allowing Morocco to dominate possession.
Senegal’s strategy paid off early on, as they took the lead through a well-placed header from Layousse Samb. However, Morocco quickly responded with a spectacular volley from Sabir Bougrine, leveling the score.
A potential red card for Marouane Louadni was rescinded after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined that Vieux Cissé had gone down too easily.
This decision proved crucial, as Morocco went on to create more scoring opportunities.
The match ultimately went to penalties, where Morocco’s composure and accuracy proved decisive. Morocco captain Mohamed Hrimat started the shootout with a successful spot kick, while Senegal’s Mbaye Ndiaye had his effort crash off the crossbar.
Morocco’s goalkeeper, El Mehdi Al Harrar, made crucial saves, and the team’s penalty takers showed their skill and confidence.
Morocco will now face Madagascar in the final on Saturday at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Atlas Lions are seeking to add to their two CHAN titles and become the most successful team in the tournament’s history. Senegal, on the other hand, will play Sudan in the third-place match on Friday in Kampala.
