The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken a firm stance against betting activities, warning players, officials, and clubs to steer clear of such practices.
In a circular dated August 6, 2025, and signed by Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, the league emphasized that betting is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

The NPFL highlighted the potential risks associated with betting, including match-fixing, which can compromise the fairness of the game and erode fan and sponsor trust. Involvement in betting activities can also damage the reputation of players, clubs, and the league as a whole.
Players and officials found guilty of betting-related offenses will face severe penalties, including:
- Expulsion from the league: As stated in Article 15.5 Section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules.
- Fines and suspensions: Outlined in Section C of the same document.
The league stressed the importance of fair play, transparency, and integrity, urging clubs and officials to act honestly and avoid actions that could harm the league’s image.
The NPFL also encouraged individuals with information about betting-related activities to report it through their official email, ensuring confidentiality for all reports.
This warning comes on the heels of a recent incident where a player was suspended due to allegations of betting.
The NPFL had received a tip-off from a Southwest club about the player’s reluctance to sign a contract form containing a clause prohibiting betting ¹.
