‎Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs have expressed concerns over slot-buying, a practice that allows teams to purchase a spot in the league from other clubs.

‎This issue was discussed at the NPFL Annual General Meeting in Abuja, where clubs gathered to address the growing concerns around slot-buying.

‎Heartland FC bought a slot from Beyond Limits FA to re-enter the league for the 2024/2025 season after suffering relegation in the previous season.

‎However, they were relegated again, prompting another attempt at slot-buying, this time by Kun Khalifa FC, also from Imo State. NPFL board member criticized the framework that allowed slot-buying, saying it might recur if not addressed.

‎NPFL Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has assured that slot-buying won’t be allowed in the upcoming season.

‎ He explained that Beyond Limits FA and Remo Stars couldn’t both participate in the NPFL due to dual representation. “We’re not interested in clubs that qualify from NNL to NPFL but our rule does not permit clubs to sell slots,” Elegbeleye emphasized.

‎Despite the controversy, Kun Khalifa FC has been drawn in the 2025/2026 NPFL season, signaling their participation in the league after securing qualification from the lower league.
