The hosts, Morocco, have qualified for the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Ghana’s Black Queens.
The match had ended 1-1 after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Ghana took the lead in the 26th minute when Josephine Bonsu headed home a perfectly placed header from a well-floated free kick by Grace Asantewaa.
The Black Queens had several chances to increase their lead, but Doris Boaduwaa and Grace Asantewaa’s efforts went wide, leaving the score at 1-0 at halftime.
Morocco came on strong in the second half, and their pressure paid off in the 58th minute when Sakina Ouzraoui bundled in the equalizer after a long ball caused issues for the Ghanaian defense.
Ghana’s defense had been solid until then, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan keeping the Moroccans at bay.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with both teams creating chances but unable to score again. In the penalty shootout, Morocco produced a perfect performance, converting all four of their penalties to win 4-2.
The Atlas Lionesses will now face Nigeria in the final on Saturday at the same venue (19:00 GMT).
Ghana will take on South Africa in the third-place game on Friday at the Stade Larbi Zouali in Casablanca (19:00 GMT).
