South Africa’s Banyana Banyana head coach, Desiree Ellis, has outlined her team’s strategy for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash against the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
The match is set to take place on Tuesday evening at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Ellis revealed that her team will approach the match against Nigeria in a similar manner to their quarter-final win against Senegal.
According to Ellis, South Africa will focus on nullifying Nigeria’s threats and seizing opportunities when they arise. “Any team you play against has threats, there’s no two ways about it,” Ellis said. “We just have to be on top of our game and try to nullify those threats and take opportunities when they come.”
Ellis emphasized the importance of being prepared and flexible in the face of a strong opponent like Nigeria.
“It’s a game of ninety minutes, maybe extra time, maybe penalties, and we just have to be on top of our game because we are coming up against an opponent that is very strong, an opponent that hasn’t conceded, that has scored goals,” she said. “So we have to make sure we have a plan A, plan B and plan C.”
The semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams looking to make a strong impression in the tournament.
Both teams have shown impressive form in the competition, with Nigeria and South Africa earlier defeating Zambia and Senegal in the quarter-finals, respectively.
