In a statement, IMC Chairman Vincent Okumagba paid tribute to the late football icon, recalling his immense contributions both on and off the pitch
“Rufai’s death is a painful loss to the country, and the IMC is particularly grieving the passing of this national icon.
“Rufai is widely regarded as one of the best Nigerian goalkeepers in football history. He served Nigeria passionately, winning many laurels for the country in international competitions.
” As a first-choice goalkeeper, he represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998 and played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ 1994 African Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia.
. “To the younger generation of players, he was a big brother and mentor,” Okumagba noted. “He started from the home league like many of them and went on to play in Europe and at the highest level for Nigeria.” Rufai’s legacy extends beyond his playing career, as he remained active in the football community, organizing goalkeeping boot camps to train and mentor upcoming talents.
“On behalf of the Interim management committee of United Supporters club , condolences are being extended to Nigerians, especially those with fond memories of Dodomayana’s exploits with the famous Stationery Stores Football Club.
