Odegaard Magic Lights Up Naples As Arsenal Begin Champions League Campaign With Victory

Martin Odegaard continued his impressive start to the season as the Arsenal captain struck a stunning late winner to secure a hard-fought Champions League victory over Napoli in Naples.
The Gunners looked set for a frustrating evening in Italy after struggling to convert several clear-cut opportunities, but Odegaard stepped up when Arsenal needed him most, firing home from outside the box to send the travelling supporters into wild celebrations.
The goal was the Norwegian’s fourth in five games, including the Community Shield, underlining his excellent early-season form.
Arsenal had created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Napoli long before Odegaard’s decisive strike.
Mikel Arteta’s side missed three major chances before finally breaking the deadlock. Mikel Merino was presented with a glorious opportunity midway through the first half, but the Spain midfielder headed straight at Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.
Bukayo Saka then came close to opening the scoring, only to lift his effort over the crossbar, before Piero Hincapie wasted another excellent opportunity by blazing over from inside the six-yard area.
The Gunners’ persistence eventually paid off through their captain.
The build-up to Odegaard’s goal demonstrated Arsenal’s patience and technical quality, with the Gunners completing 29 passes before the captain produced the decisive finish.
It was Arsenal’s second-longest recorded passing sequence leading to a Champions League goal since 2003-04, behind the 33-pass move that resulted in Lucas Perez’s second goal against Basel in December 2016.
The goal proved enough to secure all three points and give Arsenal the perfect start to their latest Champions League campaign.
Arsenal were not completely comfortable, however, as Napoli threatened on occasions.
David Raya was given a scare when he spilled a shot from outside the box by Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City star who won the Champions League with the club in 2023.
Ben White was alert to the danger, reacting quickest to clear the loose ball before Napoli could capitalise.
26 Attempts Highlight Arsenal’s Dominance
Arsenal’s attacking intent was reflected in the statistics, with Arteta’s side registering 26 attempts during the match.
That was their highest number of shots in a single Champions League game since the start of last season.
The victory also represents an encouraging start after the disappointment of last season’s Champions League final defeat. Arsenal had won all eight of their group-phase matches on their way to that final, and they have now opened this campaign with another important victory on the road.
At the final whistle, Hincapie dropped to his knees and thumped the ground with his hands in relief, perfectly capturing the tension of Arsenal’s hard-earned triumph.
