As preparations for their maiden NLO participation rages, Bright Stars football academy ukpakiri journeyed to the state capital Umuahia for a date with highly rated Superstars football academy of Umuahia in a friendly encounter- a clash that had both sides with something to savour back home with as it ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
It was the first time both sides were involved in a rumble and the iconic Abia State University Sporting complex played host to the much anticipated clash which expectedly lived up to the billing as fireworks from both ends of the pitch never ceased throughout the encounter.
The visitors had their noses in front inside 20 mins when pacy winger Chiedozie Amos capitalised on a quick counter to put the NLO outfit in front, sending a left footed drive down from the left flank into the top corner leaving the hosts’ goalkeeper rooted to the spot as he had no answers to the game’s opening goal.
The hosts pressed on for the equaliser and eventually found a breakthrough inside the visitors’ goal area which was duly utilised by the superstar’s front man to level matters before the Half-time break.
The second half rekindled the rivalry witnessed in the first half as the hosts took the lead from the spot. A well taken penalty left goalkeeper Goodluck Uwaoma helpless in goal for the visitors, leaving Bright Stars football academy with a huge responsibility to salvage their pride.
The visitors knew it was a mission statement staring on their faces, but it was just a matter of time. Workaholic midfielder Emmanuel Joshua drove brilliantly from the middle as he evaded a couple of challenges to unleash a ferocious shot which, proving to be a leveller for the visiting Bright Stars football academy, a goal deservedly applauded by the spectators in the event of having enjoyed a large spell of possession that served as an ideal build-up to the goal as all efforts for either side to find the winning goal proved abortive, the centre referee eventually brought hostilities to a climax for a share of the spoils.
Reacting after the match, head coach of Bright stars football academy, Chijioke Osuagwu commended the resilience of his lads, emphasising the need to be disciplined to the core ahead of the soon to commence NLO season.
“I have to commend my boys and ours hosts for such an interesting match up, as you all can see the game lived up it’s billing, there was never a dull moment. We’ve been playing series of friendly games, and this is the last prior to the commencement of the NLO season next week, we had to come from behind to snatch something from our hosts, that’s the kind of character and energy I expect these boys to give when the competition kick starts, I’m confident we will start on a promising note”. the vastly experienced gaffer was quoted as saying.
Bright stars football academy begins their maiden NLO participation on Wednesday 23rd April with a fiery clash against another Umuahia based outfit Jaguar FC at the OISA stadium Okpala with Kick-off billed for 10am.
It’s a season of endless possibilities on the cards for the ukpakiri based outfit.
