Super Eagles and Rangers defender Leon Balogun has stated his intentions to return for Nigeria’s national team in the qualifications for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 36-year-old last played for the Super Eagles in June 2022, where he came on during Nigeria’s 10-0 demolition of São Tomé and Príncipe. Not getting into Jose Peseiro’s list of AFCON 2023 doesn’t hold Balogun back from sticking with his pledge for the representation of his nation.
“I’ve never retired from international football,” Balogun told Brila in an interview. “I’ve always been available. Unfortunately, injuries disrupted my plans before the World Cup break, but I’m fit now and ready to contribute to the national team.”
Balogun has been in fine form for Rangers this season, playing a total of 18 games under manager Philippe Clement- just one shy of his total appearances last season. The Germany-born defender has also contributed a goal and an assist, justifying the club’s decision to retain him instead of signing Manchester United veteran Jonny Evans during the winter transfer window.
With his wealth of experience, Balogun could be a key player for the Super Eagles as they begin their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under head coach Eric Chelle.
