Aston Villa brought an end to their 30-year wait for major silverware after producing a commanding performance to defeat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul.

The victory marked a historic achievement for manager Unai Emery, who guided the Midlands club back to European glory after previous disappointments in continental competitions. Having narrowly missed out in recent campaigns, Villa finally delivered on the big stage to secure their first trophy since winning the League Cup in 1996.

Among the thousands celebrating inside Besiktas Park was William, Prince of Wales, an avid Aston Villa supporter, who watched his side compete in their first European final of his lifetime.

Villa showed their attacking intent from the opening whistle and almost took an early lead when Morgan Rogers tested Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with a powerful strike inside two minutes.

Freiburg threatened occasionally, particularly from set pieces, with Nicolas Hofler coming close after a dangerous delivery into the area. Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was also called into action to deny Freiburg youngster Johan Manzambi from long range.

The breakthrough finally arrived four minutes before halftime through a brilliantly executed set piece. A short corner routine involving Rogers created space for Youri Tielemans, who thundered a stunning volley beyond Atubolu to hand Villa the lead.

Villa struck again moments before the interval, doubling their advantage in spectacular fashion. Emiliano Buendía found room outside the penalty area and curled a magnificent effort into the top-left corner, leaving the Freiburg goalkeeper with no chance.

Buendia continued to torment the German side after the restart, nearly scoring again with an audacious chipped effort that Atubolu managed to stop.

Villa’s dominance was rewarded with a third goal in the 58th minute. Buendia turned provider this time, delivering a dangerous ball into the box that kindly fell to Rogers, who calmly finished from close range to seal the victory.

Further chances followed for Villa, with John McGinn denied by Atubolu after Amadou Onana struck the post.

The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations as Aston Villa lifted their first European trophy since conquering Europe 44 years ago, capping a remarkable campaign and ushering in a new era of success under Emery.
