AFCON 2025 Controversy: Motsepe Leads Peace Mission To Senegal

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has arrived in Dakar, Senegal, in a decisive move to address the escalating dispute surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
Motsepe’s visit comes amid growing tensions following the ruling of the CAF Appeals Committee on March 17, which controversially awarded the 2025 AFCON title to Morocco. The decision has been strongly contested by Senegal, who have since initiated legal proceedings after being stripped of the title.
During his stay in Dakar, Motsepe is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with Senegalese authorities, including President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the President of the Senegalese Football Federation, Abdoulaye Fall. The meetings are expected to focus on easing tensions, addressing Senegal’s concerns, and reinforcing confidence in CAF’s governance and decision-making processes.
The CAF president’s itinerary also includes official engagements such as a visit to the historic Gorée Island, alongside a working lunch with key stakeholders. He is later expected to address the media during a press conference scheduled for 17:30 GMT.
This diplomatic intervention is seen as a critical step toward resolving the dispute, restoring trust among member associations, and safeguarding the integrity of African football.
The outcome of Motsepe’s visit could play a pivotal role in determining the next course of action in a controversy that continues to attract widespread attention across the continent.
