Tunisia began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with an assured performance, claiming a comfortable 3–1 victory over Uganda in Tuesday night’s Group C encounter in Morocco.
The Eagles of Carthage were dominant from the opening whistle, asserting their authority early and maintaining control throughout the contest against an outmatched Ugandan side.
Tunisia’s breakthrough came inside the opening 10 minutes from a set-piece situation.
A well-delivered corner from Hannibal Mejbri picked out Ellyes Skhiri at the far post, whose powerful header struck the woodwork before rebounding off Uganda goalkeeper Jamal Salim and into the net for an unfortunate own goal.
The North Africans continued to dictate the tempo, limiting Uganda’s attacking threat and pressing high up the pitch.
The Cranes struggled to create meaningful opportunities, with winger Rogers Mato offering brief moments of promise, while Jude Ssemugabi and striker Steven Mukwala found little joy against a disciplined Tunisian backline.
Just before halftime, Tunisia doubled their advantage with a moment of quality. Left-back Ali Abdi surged down the flank, created space, and delivered a precise cross that was expertly met by Elias Achouri, who guided a composed finish into the top corner to cap a flowing team move.
Uganda attempted to respond after the break, introducing attackers Denis Omedi and Travis Mutyaba in search of inspiration.
However, Tunisia remained firmly in control and extended their lead in the 64th minute. Achouri was once again on target, reacting quickest to a rebound after a blocked effort to score his second goal of the night.
The Cranes managed to pull one back late on when Omedi capitalised on a loose ball in the box to fire home from close range, but it proved to be no more than a consolation as Tunisia comfortably saw out the match.
With the victory, Tunisia take a confident step forward in Group C and will now prepare for a highly anticipated clash against Nigeria on Saturday with top spot at stake.
Uganda, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter against East African rivals Tanzania as they look to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
