Defending Champions Edo Queens football club of Benin this afternoon at the Umuahia Township Stadium proved their supremacy over Abia Angels FC of Umuahia in match day 9 of the NWFL title race.

Edo Queens prolific winger Osigwu Goodness broke the dreadlock in 35 minute of play through a penalty kick from the spot.

Edo Queens who are presently topping group A table with 23 points from nine matches are better positioned for the Super 6.

The host team came out looking fierce for the game, but the defending champions were just too experienced for Abia Angels to handle.

They made some dangerous moves to towards Edo Queens goal mouth, but Edo Queens goalkeeper Ademola Morufa, was always there to salvage the situation.

On the resumption of the second half, Edo Queens came out looking hungry for more goals, but missed a lot of scoring chances.

Esther Moses, made it two for Edo Queens in 61st minute silencing the voice of the Abia Angels supporters.

Abia Angels got a consolation goal in 76th minute of action when the Centre Referee spotted a foul against Edo Queens right inside the penalty box.

Their utility player Lucky Mary, converted it into goal, given the homer a litter hope.

Edo Queens head coach made some changes to bring in more force into the midfield and the attack, but all efforts made by Edo Queens players to make it three proved abortive.

With this victory in Umuahia, Edo Queens have kept their unbeaten record on. With 23 points from 9 matches Edo Queens have kept the driver’s seat in group A of the NWFL abridged league.

The Benin Queens will next week Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium host Heartland Queens of Owerri. Few weeks ago, Edo Queens beat Heartland Queens of Owerri by a lone goal, they have also promise to do same in Benin City come next Wednesday.

The defeat of Abia Angels in Umuahia brings to five away wins for the Ancient City based ladies. Good record indeed.

Speaking after the match Moses Aduku, head coach of Edo Queens said:

“First and foremost, the turf did not allow us to play our game, the turf is so bad that it didn’t allow us to play the type of game we are used to. Well I commend my girls, they had their chances and took them. Though the Abia Ladies were also good because they are used to this field.”

“Again from my experience from CAF champions league, if we are contesting for the Championship, we must do something about our fields because when you leave this shore of this country, you are going to meet a different situation entirely, so something must be done about our fields.”

“Honestly, we were not happy when we did not win the CAF Women’s Champions League, we lost focused after we got to the semifinal, but actually my dream is to go back to CAF champions league again. We have to go back and work seriously our girls, but the first thing is to win the Super 6, then we can begin to plan for the that one.”

“Presently, our focus now is on our next game against Heartland Queens, it is one game at a time.

When we are done with that, we can talk about others.

But sincerely I must commend my girls they did very well and I want to urgent them to keep on with this winning mentality.”
