Sunshine Queens’ brilliant display at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Portharcourt were not enough to earn them a point against Rivers Angels in the matchday four of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

The first half of the encounter had ended in a goalless draw as both sides kept it tight in their halves .

The Akure Landladies attacked their host like wounded lions by firing home missiles persistently, but were denied by the Rivers Angels.

The hosts also struck to get a lead in the first stanza, but Sunshine Queens league debutant goalkeeper, Bright Etim kept them at bay with her brilliant saves.

The encounter was marred by protests by the visitors’ players after the center referee controversially awarded Rivers Angels a penalty early in the restart of the game.

The controversial call made by the center referee affected the Sunshine Queens’ psychologically and before they could gather themselves together, the host had extended their lead to two.

Sunshine Queens efforts to reduce the deficit were not successful as they were unlucky not to have converted their chances.

Moment later, the center referee was not convinced enough to have awarded Sunshine Queens’ a penalty after Taiwo Aganmuyi was brought down inside the box.

The hosts made it three from a counter attack to end the encounter in their favour.

Sunshine Queens will visit neighbouring Ekiti State for their match day five by next week Wednesday.
