NPFL: Sunshine Stars Edge Rivers United In Survival Battle

Sunshine stars Fc today defeated visiting Rivers United at the Ondo state sports complex, Akure , in a matchday 27 rescheduled encounter to brighten their chances of avoiding the drop.

 

 

Ibrahim Yusuf got the first chance in the 5th minute but the attacker ballooned his effort.

 

Moments later stars took full control of the match but the Visitors were disciplined at the backline

 

In the 12th minute , Duke Osimaga’s long range shot was off Target as Tunde Adeniji tried to register his name two minutes later , but his effort was not good enough.

 

Again Tunde Adeniji had only the goalkeeper to be at in the 26th , but the lanky striker failed to connect .

 

In the 36th minute , promise Awosanmi tapped home from close range but the center referee ruled offside .

 

The first half however ended goalless.

 

 

On resumption Into the second half , the star’s momentum continued, thus helping Awosanmi upfront , but the promising attacker missed with only the goalkeeper to beat .

 

 

Coach Kennedy Boboye, made a tactical change in the 69th minute, this time he introduced Suraj Ibrahim and Sodiq Ibrahim replacing Nelson Osahon and Abdulaziz Ajagbe.

 

 

The goal eventually arrived in the 68th minute , when Ibrahim Yusuf’s volley beat Rivers United goalkeeper.

 

 

Tolu Oluwole and Kingsley Ogunmola however replaced Tunde Adeniji and Promise Awosanmi respectively in the 86th minute

 

 

The lone strike from animal however, was the only one stars needed to pick the maximum points .

 

Head coach of the team Kennedy Boboye in his post match interview described the tie as a very tactical one

 

 

” It’s good we picked maximum points against a tactical team like Rivers United, it shows the better side won ”

 

Also, Captain of Sunshine stars Fc, Abe Sunday in his interview thanked stars supporters in their numbers , urging them not relent .
