The matchday 13 fixture of the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership, tagged the South South derby lived up to expectations as Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens entertained the fans at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium with their artistry on Wednesday.
Rivers Angels showed intent and purpose from the blast of the whistle, searching for an early goal. The pressure almost paid off as goalkeeper Okeke Onyinye denied Peace Effiong an opportunity to score in the 10th minute.
Bayelsa Queens’ trio of Abiola Blessing, Evanick Touta and Igbomalu Chinyere had their chance, but were denied by the Jewels of Rivers’ goalkeeper, Morufa Ademola and her defense.
At the resumption of the second half, Rivers Angels kept pressing for a goal, with a Peace Effiong chance in the 55th minute going wide.
The introduction of Patience Otobo and Uduak Ubong Peter in the 67th minute was the turning point for the Jewels of Rivers as they helped the team to control the game.
Patience Otobo scored her debut goal for Rivers Angels in the 89th minute to humble the team’s stubborn rival Bayelsa Queens and seal a Super Six ticket.
