PSG Retain UEFA Super Cup After Narrow Victory Over Aston Villa

Paris Saint-Germain continued their remarkable European run by defeating Aston Villa 2-1 to retain the UEFA Super Cup in a thrilling contest at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.
The Champions League holders secured back-to-back Super Cup triumphs after Desire Doué struck in the 62nd minute to settle a closely fought encounter and add another piece of silverware to PSG’s growing European collection.
PSG made the brighter start and eventually broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia produced a superb finish to put the French champions ahead.
Villa refused to be intimidated, however, and responded just before halftime through teenage sensation Brian Madjo.
The 17-year-old striker announced himself on the European stage in spectacular fashion, volleying John McGinn’s cross into the back of the net in the 45th minute.
Madjo had earlier gone close twice, shooting narrowly wide before heading over, but he made no mistake with his third opportunity.
His equaliser also made him the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history, capping an extraordinary personal journey after spending months waiting for clearance to play competitive football.
Villa’s attacking threat continued after the interval, but PSG regained control and eventually found the decisive goal.
In the 62nd minute, Doué finished clinically to restore PSG’s advantage. The goal was subjected to a VAR review for a possible offside, but the decision ultimately stood, handing the Parisians a 2-1 lead.
Aston Villa continued to push for another equaliser and forced PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into several important saves, but the English side could not find a second goal.
The victory means PSG successfully retain the trophy they won for the first time last year after defeating Tottenham on penalties.
For Villa manager Unai Emery, the defeat represents another frustrating chapter, with the Spaniard now having lost all four of his UEFA Super Cup finals across his managerial career.
Despite the disappointment, Villa can take plenty of encouragement from their performance, particularly given the absence of several key players following the World Cup.
Captain John McGinn had promised supporters that the team would give everything this season, and the performance in Salzburg backed up those words.
The match also made history for Somali referee Omar Artan, who became the first non-European official to referee the UEFA Super Cup.
Villa will now turn their attention to the new Premier League campaign, with their season opener against Brighton on August 23. The club is also expected to remain active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen the squad.
Despite falling short against the European champions, Villa’s spirited display offered plenty of optimism ahead of the new season, while PSG continue to underline their status as one of Europe’s dominant forces.
