Falconets Striker Janet Akekoromowei Completes Benfica Move

Portuguese champions Benfica have completed the signing of Falconets striker Janet Akekoromowei, with the highly-rated Nigerian youngster embarking on the next chapter of her promising career.
The 18-year-old has signed a two-year contract, with an option to extend her stay by a further two years, as Benfica continue to strengthen their squad with emerging talent.
Akekoromowei joins the Portuguese giants after an outstanding campaign in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), where she starred for Nasarawa Amazons. She was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2024/25 season after netting 13 goals in 19 league appearances.
She also previously featured for Bayelsa Queens, further establishing herself as one of Nigeria’s brightest young forwards.
On the international stage, Akekoromowei represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia as a member of the Falconets squad. Her impressive performances have also earned her senior national team recognition, having already been capped by the Super Falcons.
The move to Benfica marks a significant milestone in the teenager’s career as she looks to continue her development at one of Europe’s leading women’s clubs and make her mark in Portuguese football.
