The United States made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their Group D opener in Los Angeles, as striker Folarin Balogun scored twice to lead the co-hosts to an emphatic win.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Mauricio Pochettino’s men wasted little time asserting themselves and took the lead after just seven minutes. Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after a dangerous move orchestrated by Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie.

The Americans continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Balogun having a goal ruled out for offside before eventually getting on the scoresheet in the 31st minute. The AS Monaco striker latched onto a precise pass from Pulisic and finished clinically to double the hosts’ advantage.

Balogun struck again before halftime to put the match beyond Paraguay’s reach. The former Arsenal forward raced onto a through ball from Malik Tillman, shrugged off a defensive challenge, and curled a superb effort into the top corner to make it 3-0.

His brace placed him in the history books as only the second American player to score more than once in a World Cup match, following Bert Patenaude, who famously netted the tournament’s first-ever hat-trick against Paraguay in 1930.

Paraguay briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half when Mauricio, set up by Julio Enciso, calmly slotted past goalkeeper Matt Freese to reduce the deficit. However, the United States remained firmly in control and continued to create opportunities against a struggling Paraguayan defence.

The victory was sealed in spectacular fashion deep into stoppage time when substitute Giovanni Reyna produced the goal of the night. The Borussia Dortmund playmaker curled a stunning 20-yard strike into the net with the outside of his right foot, leaving the crowd on its feet and putting the finishing touch on an impressive performance.

Christian Pulisic was once again at the heart of the United States’ attacking play, creating problems down the left flank and playing a key role in the opening two goals. Although his withdrawal at halftime may be a concern for head coach Mauricio Pochettino, his influence on the contest was undeniable.

The Americans finished with 16 attempts on goal and could easily have added more to their tally, with Chris Richards and Malik Tillman both going close during a dominant display.

The match also marked a memorable start to the World Cup on American soil, with a colourful opening ceremony, celebrity guests, and more than 70,000 fans creating a vibrant atmosphere in Los Angeles.

For the United States, however, the real celebration came on the pitch. Their composed and clinical performance provided the perfect start to the tournament and strengthened hopes of a deep run that could further elevate the popularity of football across the country.

With Balogun in top form and Pochettino’s side showing confidence and attacking quality, the hosts have sent an early warning to the rest of the competition.
