Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw in the final at Budapest’s Puskas Arena.

The result denied Arsenal their first-ever Champions League triumph and dashed hopes of completing a memorable domestic and European double just days after securing their first Premier League title in 22 years.

Mikel Arteta’s side made a sensational start to the contest, taking the lead just six minutes into the game. Kai Havertz, who famously scored the winner for Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League final, latched onto a through ball, burst beyond the PSG defence and fired emphatically into the roof of the net.

However, PSG gradually wrestled control of the match and dominated possession for long periods. Luis Enrique’s men dictated the tempo, forcing Arsenal deep into their own half as the Gunners relied heavily on the defensive resilience of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, who produced several crucial interventions to keep the French champions at bay.

Arteta had entrusted teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly with a midfield role and continued with Cristhian Mosquera at right-back in the absence of the injured Ben White and the not fully fit Jurrien Timber.

The decision came under scrutiny in the second half when Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area after being beaten by the Georgian winger’s clever movement. Ousmane Dembele calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to level the scores.

PSG continued to press for a winner and came agonisingly close during normal time. Kvaratskhelia struck the post, while Vitinha tested Arsenal with a dangerous effort from outside the box. The French side enjoyed approximately 75 percent possession and looked the more likely team to find a decisive breakthrough.
