Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after two seasons at Anfield, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s tenure despite delivering Premier League success during his first campaign.
Slot, 47, made an immediate impact after succeeding Jurgen Klopp in 2024, guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title in his debut season. However, the Reds endured a difficult second year, finishing fifth in the Premier League and falling short of expectations.
The club is now expected to begin the search for a successor, with recently departed Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate for the role.
In a statement, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) expressed their appreciation for Slot’s contributions while explaining the rationale behind the decision.
“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” the statement read. “The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC during his time here has been significant, meaningful and successful.
“Our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater. His work ethic, professionalism and expertise consistently demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the leading coaches in the game.”
The decision was reportedly taken by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes after a thorough review of the season.
Throughout the campaign, Liverpool maintained that a managerial change was not under consideration. However, following the conclusion of the season, the club’s hierarchy determined that a fresh tactical direction was necessary.
Liverpool’s leadership believes the team requires a more aggressive, front-foot style of football to compete at the highest level, reminiscent of the approach that brought tremendous success during Klopp’s reign.
Earlier this month, star forward Mohamed Salah publicly called for a return to the attacking intensity that once made Liverpool one of Europe’s most feared sides. Following a defeat to Aston Villa, Salah said the team must become a “heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear” once again.
Much of Liverpool’s modern success came under Klopp’s high-energy system, which delivered every major trophy available, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
FSG emphasized that Slot’s departure should not be viewed as a criticism of his abilities.
“The conclusion we have come to is based on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction,” the statement continued. “This does not diminish the work Arne has done or the respect we have for him. Rather, it reflects our belief that a different approach is required for the next phase of the club’s development.”
Slot leaves Liverpool having secured a Premier League title and restored domestic success during his brief spell in charge. The club also paid tribute to him and his family, stating that they would always be welcome at Anfield.
As Liverpool prepare for a new era, attention now turns to who will take over the reins and lead the club back into title contention next season.
