Crystal Palace etched their name into European football history after defeating Spanish side Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the UEFA Conference League and secure the club’s first-ever European trophy.

The historic final, played at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, saw French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta emerge as the hero for the Eagles with the decisive goal in the second half.

After an intense and tightly contested opening 45 minutes ended goalless, Palace finally broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half. Midfielder Adam Wharton unleashed a powerful effort from distance which was initially parried by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, but Mateta reacted quickest to tap home from close range and hand the Premier League side a deserved lead.

The victory marks another remarkable milestone in Crystal Palace’s recent rise, coming just over a year after the South London club lifted the FA Cup to claim the first major trophy in their history at Wembley Stadium.

The triumph also provided a fitting farewell for manager Oliver Glasner, who is set to depart Selhurst Park after announcing earlier this year that he would leave the club at the end of the season. The Austrian tactician exits on a high note, adding the Conference League title to the UEFA Europa League crown he previously won with German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Crystal Palace have now become the third English club to win the UEFA Conference League since the competition was introduced in 2021, following successes by West Ham United and Chelsea.

The Eagles’ success continues a memorable campaign for English clubs in Europe. Their victory comes just a week after Aston Villa lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy to secure their first major silverware in three decades and their first European title since 1982.

Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest, where Premier League champions Arsenal will face holders Paris Saint-Germain, with English clubs hoping to complete a clean sweep of European trophies this season.
