Rangers International have been crowned champions of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday.
The famous Enugu-based club sealed their ninth NPFL title in style, capping off a remarkable campaign under the guidance of head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu. The Flying Antelopes displayed composure, determination, and attacking quality when it mattered most to emerge as the kings of Nigerian football once again.
Knowing that victory would guarantee the championship, Rangers approached the decisive fixture with confidence and intensity. Their positive start paid off in the 30th minute when midfielder Chidiebere Nwobodo broke the deadlock with a well-taken finish to silence the home supporters and hand the visitors a deserved lead.
Rangers continued to dominate proceedings after the interval and doubled their advantage ten minutes into the second half through the impressive Nwobodo, who completed his brace with another clinical effort. His outstanding performance proved decisive in one of the biggest matches of the season.
Ikorodu City, who were equally desperate for points in their pursuit of a continental ticket, refused to surrender without a fight. Moses Ali pulled one back for the Lagos-based side just before the hour mark, setting up a tense finale as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
Despite late pressure from Ikorodu City, Rangers held firm defensively to protect their lead and secure the victory that confirmed them as league champions. The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the players, coaching staff, and travelling supporters as the Flying Antelopes reclaimed their place at the summit of Nigerian football.
The triumph marks a significant achievement for Fidelis Ilechukwu, whose tactical discipline and leadership transformed Rangers into the most consistent side of the campaign. Their success was built on resilience, teamwork, and impressive performances across the season.
Meanwhile, Rivers United finished second on the table after an emphatic 3-0 victory over Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt. Chijioke Mbaoma starred for Rivers United with a brilliant brace, while Aniekeme Okon added the third goal to complete a dominant display.
Although Rivers United ended the season strongly, Rangers’ crucial victory in Lagos ensured that the Enugu giants lifted the coveted NPFL trophy for the ninth time in their illustrious history.
