The stage is set for a thrilling showdown as the draw for the final phase of the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was conducted on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football.
The outcome has produced evenly matched groups, setting the tone for what promises to be an intensely competitive tournament.
Scheduled to take place at the prestigious Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat from May 13 to June 2, 2026, the tournament will feature 16 of Africa’s brightest young teams competing for continental glory.
The competition format adds another layer of excitement. The top two teams from each group will automatically progress to the quarterfinals, while the four third-placed teams will battle it out in playoff fixtures for the remaining two spots.
Beyond continental honors, qualification for the global stage is also at stake, with ten African nations earning tickets to the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026 in Qatar.
Group Breakdown
Group A: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia
All eyes will be on Group A, where hosts Morocco headline a fierce North African rivalry.
Having swept through the UNAF qualifiers unbeaten, Morocco will be confident, but must contend with traditional heavyweights Tunisia and Egypt, alongside a determined Ethiopian side. This group is set to deliver high-intensity encounters from start to finish.
Group B: Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Uganda, DR Congo
Group B presents a blend of experience and fresh ambition. DR Congo make their debut at this stage, but face a stern test against former champions Ivory Coast and Cameroon. Uganda adds further depth, making this a physically demanding and unpredictable group.
Group C: Mali, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique
Mali enter as strong favorites, boasting an impressive pedigree with two previous titles and a runner-up finish in the last edition. However, Angola, Tanzania, and Mozambique will be eager to upset the odds, bringing a diverse and dynamic edge to the group.
Group D: Senegal, South Africa, Algeria, Ghana
Widely regarded as the “Group of Death,” Group D is stacked with pedigree and talent. Defending champions Senegal will face fierce competition from South Africa, Algeria, and two-time winners Ghana. Every match here is expected to be a battle, with little margin for error.
With balanced groups, historic rivalries, and World Cup qualification on the line, the 2026 U-17 AFCON promises to be one of the most exciting editions in recent memory.
Africa’s future football stars are ready to shine on one of the continent’s biggest youth stages.
