Liverpool FC face a daunting battle to keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive after suffering a crushing defeat to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Reds were outclassed in Paris, falling 2-0 as Désiré Doué opened the scoring with a deflected effort that looped over stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then produced a moment of brilliance to double PSG’s lead, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb ahead of the return leg at Anfield.
It was a disappointing outing for Liverpool FC, who failed to register a single shot on target. Still reeling from a heavy defeat to Manchester City in their previous match, the English side adopted a cautious approach, deploying a five-man defence in an attempt to contain the Ligue 1 leaders.
However, PSG took control early, with Doué’s 11th-minute strike—deflected off Virgil van Dijk—setting the tone for a dominant display. Despite the early setback, Mamardashvili produced several impressive saves, including a superb one-handed stop to deny Kvaratskhelia and another to keep out Doué.
PSG eventually extended their lead when Kvaratskhelia rounded the goalkeeper after a defence-splitting pass from João Neves, calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
The hosts could have added more goals, with Ousmane Dembélé missing multiple clear-cut chances, while a potential penalty involving Warren Zaïre-Emery was overturned after a VAR review. Ibrahima Konaté also survived a late scare following a challenge on Nuno Mendes in stoppage time.
Alexander Isak made a return from injury, coming off the bench for his first appearance since December, but could not alter the outcome.
Liverpool must now produce a remarkable comeback in the second leg at Anfield next Tuesday if they are to overturn PSG’s advantage and keep their European dream alive.
While PSG will benefit from a free weekend to prepare for the decisive clash, Liverpool turn their attention back to domestic action, where they will aim to end a three-game winless run in the Premier League when they host Fulham FC.
