NSC Students’ Athletes Appreciation Tour : Pioneering A New Era In Nigerian Sports

The National Sports Commission (NSC), headed by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade as the Director General, is changing the dynamics in managing sporting talents in Nigeria.
NSC took a pragmatic step in capturing students’ athletes who have been outstanding in sports for Nigeria by acknowledging , supporting, and rewarding them with cash rewards.
In the past, absolute attention has always been centred on national athletes and especially elite athletes who had participated in international tournaments and won medals for the country. Young athletes at the grassroots level have had to fall back on personal, school, and parental support to survive in sports until a breakthrough occurs if the passion still burns.
This ugly trend in the grassroots level has been dramatically changed as the leadership of the NSC is all about innovation, pushing boundaries, achieving greatness, and inspiring future generations.
This trailblazing initiative has touched grass roots sports nationwide, and the gains are there for all to see.
The Appreciation Tour embraced, rewarded, and acknowledged the hard work of the secondary school students who had excelled in sports even as they combined it with their studies.
The Appreciation Tour for secondary school athletes by the National Sports Commission is indeed a new initiative in Nigeria aimed at recognising and encouraging young talents in sports.
The tour led by the ever pragmatic and focused oriented DG of NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade started with visits to stand out swimmers Aidan Dumuije Abih and Tofunmi Ibidapo of Grange School, Lagos, who excelled at the 2025 African Zone 2 swimming championship.
The NSC presented cash rewards to these young athletes, with Aidan receiving N2million and Tofunmi N1 million , as part of NSC’s strategy to promote grass roots, sports development and integrity in age grade Sports.
This strategic and first of its kind appreciation athletes/students tour is part of the NSC effort to support emerging talents, strengthen school sports partnerships, and priorize athlete welfare.
In continuation of captured students in the Appreciation Tour, athletes in Abuja were not left behind as Rose- Mary Chigozie Nwankwo and Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu two expectional junior athletes who first emerged through the invited junior athletes initiative, both athletes had progressed through various stages before going on to secure additional medals at the African Youth Games in Angola and African school Games in Algeria.
Other beneficiaries captured were Taekwondo athletes, Crown Umeh, and Unique Umeh, who received N1million each in recognition of their performances in African School Games in Algeria.
In Athletics, Andrew Miracle Yemi, an African Junior stand out , received N2 million in appreciation of his achievement, Adaeze Precious was also honoured with N1 million, while Chigozie Nwankwo received N3 million for her outstanding performances.
The athlete students Appreciation Tour is an important and new strategy of the NSC to support and reward emerging and outstanding talents while strengthening the foundation of Nigerian sports through structured grass roots development
Hon Bukola Olopade, who made an emphatic and encouraging pledge that the NSC will continue to encourage strong relationships between schools and sports.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always made it clear that the Nigerian athletes must never feel abandoned or neglected.”
This important, sensitive, and strategic movement in sports by the NSC has broken the mold, set new standards, and taken Nigerian Sports to the next level of sublimity.
Hon Bukola Olopade whose leadership of the Appreciation tour team has proved that his passion is uplifting sports in Nigeria. The NSC goals are also in tandem with that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ desire for sports in Nigeria.
This bold and significant initiative is unprecedented and ought to be applauded by every sports loving Nigerian.
There is indeed a renewed hope in the sporting sector of Nigeria through the dynamic foresight of NSC leadership.
