Rivers United’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the CAF Champions League suffered a major blow following a 1–0 defeat to Zambia’s Power Dynamos in Uyo on Sunday.
The Pride of Rivers had held their hosts to a goalless draw in the reverse fixture in Ndola last weekend, but were unable to replicate that resilience at home as the Zambian champions snatched all three points.
The decisive moment of the encounter came when Kondwani Chiboni found the back of the net, scoring the lone goal that sealed a crucial away victory for Power Dynamos.
The defeat leaves Rivers United winless after four matches in Group C, with Finidi George’s side languishing at the bottom of the standings on just one point.
With qualification hopes fading, the former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions now face a daunting task as they prepare to host defending champions Pyramids FC of Egypt in their next group fixture scheduled for next Sunday.
