Basketball stakeholders across the country have dismissed recent attacks against the leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) as a calculated attempt by a long-serving board member to deliberately disrupt the lawful tenure of the current board for personal advantage.

According to informed stakeholders, the agenda is no longer hidden. The sustained criticism, misinformation, and public outbursts are aimed at creating instability within the federation, with the ultimate goal of truncating the current leadership’s tenure ahead of schedule. This, they insist, is designed to position certain individuals to benefit from Nigeria’s participation at the Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for August, rather than serve the long-term interests of the sport.

Observers note that this is not an isolated incident but part of a familiar pattern. The same veteran board member has, over the past three decades, been in constant conflict with virtually every federation leadership, repeatedly positioning himself against successive presidents whenever personal influence or control was curtailed. Stakeholders argue that the current situation fits squarely into this historical pattern.

Tensions reportedly escalated after internal restructuring within the board, including the removal of the individual from a key technical leadership position. That decision, stakeholders say, was taken in the interest of professionalism, transparency, and institutional reform. Since then, what began as internal disagreement has evolved into open hostility, media campaigns, and sustained efforts to delegitimise the board’s constitutional mandate.

More troubling to stakeholders is the widening scope of the attacks. Beyond targeting the federation’s leadership, the veteran board member has allegedly turned his ire on journalists and media practitioners who refuse to align with or amplify his narrative. Reporters perceived as neutral or supportive of constitutional order have reportedly faced intimidation, harassment, and public disparagement — a development stakeholders have described as sad, dangerous, and unacceptable in a democratic sporting environment.

Basketball stakeholders maintain that freedom of the press and professional independence of journalists must be respected, stressing that media houses are not tools for personal vendettas or power struggles. Attempts to bully or discredit journalists for refusing to support a personal agenda, they warn, undermine the credibility of the sport and erode public trust.

At the heart of the matter, stakeholders insist, is a simple truth: the current NBBF tenure is constitutional, lawful, and sacrosanct. Any attempt to misrepresent tenure timelines, stir confusion, or force an early exit through public pressure is viewed as an abuse of process and a direct threat to institutional stability.

They further caution that personal ambition must never be allowed to overshadow national interest, especially at a time when Nigerian basketball continues to enjoy global relevance and prepares for major international competitions. The focus, they stress, should remain on athlete welfare, technical development, and sustained progress — not internal sabotage driven by individual gain.

Stakeholders have therefore called on all actors to exercise restraint, respect constitutional order, and place Nigerian basketball above personal grievances. As one insider noted, “No individual is bigger than the institution. The truth remains sacrosanct, and history has a way of exposing every agenda.”
