Co-owner of Moonluck Football Academy and Chief Executive Officer of MVP Sports Management, Alhaji Datti Umar Yusuf, has been officially appointed as an Ambassador of the prestigious IberCup, one of the world’s largest and most influential international youth football tournaments.
The appointment comes on the heels of a remarkable achievement by Moonluck Football Academy, which Alhaji Datti co-owns, after the Nigerian academy emerged champions of the 2025 IberCup edition a historic feat that further underlines the growing quality and global competitiveness of grassroots football development in Africa.
Reacting to his appointment, an elated Alhaji Datti Umar Yusuf described the honour as both humbling and strategic, noting that it presents a rare opportunity to elevate African youth football onto a stronger global platform.
He expressed deep appreciation to the IberCup organisers for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to use his new role to create meaningful pathways for young African talents.
According to him, his vision as an IberCup Ambassador is centered on bridging the long-standing gap between top African football academies and their counterparts in Europe and South America.
He revealed plans to facilitate partnerships, exchange programmes, exposure tournaments, and structured scouting opportunities that will enable African youngsters to compete, learn, and thrive at the highest levels of global football development.
“I see this appointment as a responsibility to serve,” Alhaji Datti stated. “Africa is blessed with immense football talent, and through platforms like the IberCup, we can provide our young players with the visibility, structure, and opportunities they deserve to succeed internationally.”
The IberCup is widely regarded as one of the most respected youth football tournaments in the world, featuring elite academies from Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Africa.
Beyond competition, the tournament has earned global recognition as a proven talent development and discovery hub, closely followed by scouts from top clubs across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Its pedigree is further highlighted by its impressive alumni list. Notably, six players from Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League–winning squad—João Neves, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Seny Mayulu—all passed through the IberCup system.
Five of them are now full internationals for Portugal and France, while Mayulu represents the France U-20 team, underscoring the tournament’s growing influence as a genuine grooming ground for future stars.
Since its inception in Benfica 16 years ago, the IberCup has grown into one of the most attractive and competitive youth tournaments in global football, offering young players a rare chance to showcase their talents on an international stage while accelerating their development through elite competition.
With Alhaji Datti Umar Yusuf’s appointment as an IberCup Ambassador, African youth football stands poised to benefit from stronger global connections, expanded exposure, and renewed belief that the continent’s next generation of stars can rise from local academies to the very top of world football.
