Real Madrid have officially ended the tenure of Xabi Alonso as head coach, bringing his time at the Santiago Bernabéu to an abrupt conclusion.
The LaLiga giants confirmed the decision less than 24 hours after suffering a painful 3–2 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Supercopa final, a result that further intensified scrutiny on the former midfielder’s leadership.
Alonso had downplayed the significance of the loss in his post-match comments, describing the Supercopa as “the least important” competition on Real Madrid’s calendar.
However, the remarks appeared to do little to ease mounting concerns within the club hierarchy.
In an official statement, Real Madrid announced that the separation was reached by mutual consent.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”
Despite his iconic status as a former player, Alonso had been under increasing pressure in recent weeks, with inconsistent performances leaving Madrid struggling for form in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.
The timing of the decision adds further intrigue, coming just two days before Los Blancos’ Copa del Rey Round of 16 encounter against Albacete, leaving the club facing an immediate test as they look to steady the ship and refocus their campaign
