Ademola Lookman has downplayed the on-field incident involving Victor Osimhen during Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles delivered a commanding performance on Monday night to book their place in the quarter-finals, with both Lookman and Osimhen getting on the scoresheet.
While Osimhen netted twice, Lookman starred with a goal and a remarkable hat-trick of assists, earning his second Man of the Match award of the tournament.
However, the comfortable win was briefly overshadowed by a tense moment in the 64th minute. With Nigeria already 3-0 ahead and preparing to take a corner kick, Osimhen was seen angrily confronting Lookman after the winger opted not to pass to him, despite the striker believing he was better positioned to score.
Moments later, the former African Player of the Year signaled to the bench requesting a substitution and was subsequently replaced by Moses Simon.
At the final whistle, Osimhen headed straight down the tunnel while the rest of the squad regrouped on the pitch.
Addressing the incident during his post-match press conference, Lookman was quick to dismiss any suggestion of internal discord, insisting the team’s victory mattered far more than the momentary disagreement.
“I don’t think that is really important. The team won 4-0,” Lookman told journalists. “Vic is my number one guy, everybody knows this. He’s a top striker and a top player, so the rest is not important.”
Nigeria will now shift focus to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face either Algeria or DR Congo in Marrakech on Saturday, January 5, as the Super Eagles continue their quest for continental glory.
