Mohamed Salah was once again the hero for Egypt as his decisive strike sealed a 2-1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday in Morocco.
Zimbabwe stunned the seven-time African champions by taking the lead in the 20th minute.
Prince Dube capitalised on a rare opportunity, firing a low shot past goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to give his side an unexpected advantage.
Egypt responded with authority, dominating possession and pinning Zimbabwe deep in their own half.
The Pharaohs created several clear chances to restore parity but were repeatedly frustrated by Zimbabwe’s disciplined defensive display.
Omar Marmoush came closest in the first half, forcing Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi into a fine save as Egypt continued to pile on the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute when Marmoush made no mistake, unleashing a powerful effort that flew past Arubi to bring Egypt back on level terms.
As Zimbabwe battled to hold on for a draw, Egypt’s relentless attacking eventually told. Mohamed Salah rose to the occasion, showing strength and composure inside the box to calmly slot home the winning goal and secure all three points for the Pharaohs.
The victory gives Egypt a crucial winning start to their AFCON 2025 campaign and underlines their status as one of the tournament favourites.
