Edel FC began their Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign on a winning note after narrowly defeating Sunshine Stars FC 1–0 in a tightly contested opener at the Awka City Stadium.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Ifeanyi Aniji’s deflected free-kick wrong-footed the goalkeeper, handing the hosts a crucial lead against the run of play.
Sunshine Stars, coached by Bobola Akinfolarin, started the match on the front foot, dominating early possession and carving out several promising opportunities. However, their inability to apply the finishing touch proved costly.
After the interval, Akinfolarin made tactical adjustments, injecting fresh legs and urgency into his side’s attack. Sunshine Stars pressed relentlessly for an equaliser, creating multiple goalmouth scrambles and forcing Edel FC to defend deep.
Their best chance fell to Ayo Adejubu in the 81st minute, but his effort drifted agonisingly wide after an impressive team build-up.
Despite their spirited second-half display, Sunshine Stars were unable to level the score and were forced to settle for an opening-day defeat.
The Akure-based club will now regroup and shift focus to their next assignment a crucial home clash against Gateway FC next weekend at the Ondo State Sports Complex.
