It was a tough evening for Nigeria’s CAF Champions League hopefuls, Remo Stars FC, as they suffered a heavy 5–1 defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their second-round clash on Sunday.
The match, played at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, saw the visitors stamp their authority from the first whistle, displaying pace, precision, and superior tactical organization.
Goals from Tashreeq Matthews and Peter Shalulile handed the South African champions a comfortable 2–0 lead heading into halftime.
Sundowns maintained their dominance in the second half, adding a third through Miguel Reisinho in the 60th minute. Substitutes Arthur De Oliveira and Katlego Ntsabeleng later completed the rout with goals in the 74th and 84th minutes, respectively.
Remo Stars, backed by a lively home crowd, managed a consolation in the 76th minute when Samson Olasupo unleashed a fine strike from outside the box — a goal that gave the supporters a brief moment of cheer.
With the second leg set to be played in South Africa, the Ikenne-based side face an uphill battle but will be hoping for a miraculous turnaround to keep their CAF Champions League group stage dream alive.
