The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Referees Committee has wielded the disciplinary axe on three referees over alleged poor officiating during the Week 8 fixtures of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
In a statement released by the Committee and signed by its Secretary, Ameenu Mohammed, the referees were found guilty of “acts inconsistent with the provisions of the Laws of the Game” and conduct capable of bringing the sport into disrepute.
The affected officials include Referee Mohammed B. Tuta from Adamawa State and Assistant Referee 1, Ben Japhet from Benue State, who officiated the controversial Kano Pillars vs Shooting Stars encounter. Both officials were accused of decisions that fell short of professional standards.
Similarly, Referee Ikechukwu Taiwo from Rivers State, who took charge of the Nasarawa United vs Rangers International game, was sanctioned for awarding what the Committee described as an “unjustified penalty” during the match.
The NFF Referees Committee confirmed that all three officials have been suspended indefinitely, pending further review and retraining programs.
The Committee reiterated its commitment to maintaining integrity, transparency, and professionalism within Nigerian football officiating, warning that any referee found compromising match standards will face severe disciplinary action.
