Bayelsa United secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rivers United in an electrifying South-South derby at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Monday morning.
The encounter, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to heavy rainfall that rendered the pitch unplayable.
Despite playing away from home, Bayelsa United showed great composure and determination to hand Rivers United their first defeat of the 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
Shuaibu Garba opened the scoring for the visitors in the 28th minute after capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the hosts. Nineteen minutes from time, Chinedu Emmanuel doubled Bayelsa United’s advantage with a fine finish to put them firmly in control.
Rivers United’s Stephen Manyo pulled one back deep into stoppage time, but it was too late to spark a comeback as Bayelsa United held on to claim all three points.
