It was a memorable night for Nigerian stars Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke as both played key roles in Sevilla’s emphatic 4–1 victory over defending champions Barcelona in Sunday’s La Liga showdown at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
Adams, who recently earned a call-up to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, capped off an excellent display by scoring Sevilla’s fourth goal deep into stoppage time.
His strike came after a brilliant assist from fellow Nigerian winger Chidera Ejuke, who dazzled down the flank before setting up Adams for a clinical finish in the 98th minute.
The 24-year-old forward, known for his strength and finishing ability, has now scored two goals in six La Liga appearances this season — further cementing his growing reputation in Spanish football. Ejuke, meanwhile, provided his first assist in what was his fourth league appearance since joining the Andalusian side.
Sevilla started the game on the front foot, pressing high and punishing Barcelona’s defensive lapses. The home side went 2–0 up in the first half, dominating possession and creating numerous chances.
Despite a moment of brilliance from Pedri, who combined beautifully with Marcus Rashford (Barça’s new signing) to pull one back, Barcelona found themselves outplayed in key areas of the pitch.
The second half offered the Catalans a chance to mount a comeback, but a missed penalty from Robert Lewandowski proved costly. Sevilla seized control again, scoring a decisive third before Adams’ late strike sealed a historic victory and sent the home crowd into raptures.
For head coach Quique Sánchez Flores, it was a tactical masterclass — his decision to deploy Ejuke in a free attacking role behind Adams paid off handsomely, as the pair combined to devastating effect in the dying moments.
Adams’ fine form also comes as a boost for Nigeria’s national team, as Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle continues to assess attacking options ahead of crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures next month.
The result leaves Sevilla climbing steadily up the La Liga table, while Barcelona face questions over their defensive discipline and consistency as their title defence falters.
