Nigeria’s Flying Eagles bounced back from their opening day defeat to Norway with a dramatic 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia in their second group match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Flying Eagles started brightly, taking the lead in the 11th minute when Nasiru Salihu expertly headed home a fine cross from Sani Suleiman.
However, Saudi Arabia responded in the 21st minute through Amar Al Yuhaybi, who latched onto a long ball and calmly finished past the Nigerian goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
Nigeria regained the advantage in the 38th minute when Amos Ochoche produced a spectacular strike following a well-executed set piece routine. The Flying Eagles went into the break with a slim 2-1 lead.
The young Falcons of Saudi Arabia, however, showed resilience, hitting back in the second half. Talal Haji restored parity with a close-range finish, bringing the scoreline to 2-2.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, the Flying Eagles were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time. Team captain Daniel Bameyi held his nerve to convert from the spot in the 94th minute, handing Nigeria a priceless 3-2 victory.
In the other fixture of the group, Colombia and Norway played out a goalless draw, leaving the group standings finely balanced.
The Flying Eagles will now turn their attention to their final group match against Colombia on Monday, where a win could secure their passage into the knockout rounds.
