Ademola Lookman featured from the start as Atalanta came from behind to defeat Belgian champions Club Brugge 2–1 in their UEFA Champions League Group Stage encounter at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Nigerian forward, making his first start of the season, lined up alongside Nikola Krstovic in attack but struggled to influence proceedings.
His evening ended in the 61st minute when he was substituted for Ghana’s Kamaldeen Sulemana.
Christos Tzolis silenced the home crowd with a well-taken opener in the 38th minute.
The Italian side responded strongly in the second half. Lazar Samardzic levelled the score in the 73rd minute from the penalty spot.
Midfielder Mario Pasalic sealed the comeback with a clinical finish three minutes from full time, sparking wild celebrations.
Lookman’s contribution was limited, but the match marked an important step in his return to full fitness and rhythm after a delayed start to the season.
His compatriot Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge was absent due to injury, denying fans a potential Nigeria-versus-Nigeria showdown.
The win strengthens their bid for knockout stage qualification and highlights their resilience at home.
Despite a brave performance, the Belgians will rue missed opportunities and their inability to hold on to the lead.
While not at his best, the Nigerian forward will look to build on this start as he seeks more game time and sharper form.
