“Stop Blaming NFF, Blame the Players” – South Africa-Based Nigerian Coach

FIFA’s recent decision to deduct three points and three goals from South Africa has been received with joy by many Nigerians, who believe this boosts
Nigeria’s World Cup qualification chances. But South Africa-based Nigerian coach Emmanuel Ndubuisi has warned that the Super Eagles’ real problem lies elsewhere within the team itself.
Speaking candidly, Coach Ndubuisi stressed that many of the players lack the seriousness and commitment required to deliver results on the biggest stage.
“I speak as a coach, not a journalist. I don’t see urgency, determination, or sacrifice in some of our players, and that is a major issue hurting the team’s performances,” he said.
Ndubuisi explained that when facing underdogs, the Eagles often fail to kill off games early.
“If you don’t score in the first 15 or 20 minutes, you give smaller teams confidence. They start to believe they are equals, and if they score first, it becomes even worse,” he noted.
Reflecting on the recent clash against South Africa, he singled out some senior players for underwhelming displays:
Wilfred Ndidi is guilty of losing possession and committing needless fouls.
While Ademola Lookman is slow and indecisive in attack.
Captain William Troost-Ekong is short of confidence.
However, he praised Calvin Bassey, Benjamin Tanimu, and a few others for showing determination and character.
Beyond tactics, Ndubuisi believes the players’ mindset is a bigger concern.
“You will see them against Lesotho, still goalless by the 80th minute. Then fans rush to blame the NFF or coaches as if they can perform miracles. The truth is, some of these players are failing over 200 million Nigerians who depend on them,” he argued.
He criticized their lack of discipline off the pitch as well:
“They come to training with headphones, listening to music, relaxed, as if the results don’t matter. That shows no urgency, no seriousness, and no respect for the country they represent.”
Ndubuisi concluded with a stern warning: unless the Super Eagles rediscover their hunger, fighting spirit, and commitment, no points deduction or favourable result elsewhere will guarantee success.
“This is about sacrifice and mentality. Nigeria deserves players who understand the weight of the jersey and the hopes of the nation.”
