Remo Stars have advanced to the second round of the CAF Champions League after sealing a 1-0 win over US Zilimadjou of Comoros in the return leg of their preliminary tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Friday.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions triumphed 5-0 on aggregate, having convincingly won the first leg away from home.
Despite dominating the opening half, the Sky Blue Stars failed to capitalize on their chances, with the game locked at 0-0 at the break.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 73rd minute when Ibrahim Abubakar’s cross was handled inside the penalty area. Alex Oyowah stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick to hand Remo Stars the decisive goal.
Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s men will now battle South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the second round of the competition — a clash that promises to test their continental credentials.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representatives, Rivers United, remain in contention after playing out a goalless draw away to Les Aigles of DR Congo. They will host the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Sunday.
