South African striker Thembi Kgatlana has clarified the reasons behind her absence from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) squad, stating that she is taking a pre-arranged leave of absence from all football for personal reasons.
Kgatlana watched from the sidelines as Banyana Banyana, the South African women’s national team, was eliminated from the tournament in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Nigeria in the semi-finals. The team will now play Ghana for a bronze medal on Friday.
Kgatlana took to social media to address speculation surrounding her absence, assuring fans that she will return to the game soon.
“It was difficult for me to watch Banyana Banyana exit WAFCON 2024 from the side-lines last night, but I am proud of the girls’ fight and achievement,” she said.
Kgatlana explained that her leave of absence is pre-arranged and not just limited to Banyana Banyana, but all football.
”I love representing my country and will do so again in the future,” she added.
Kgatlana also addressed concerns from her fans at Tigres UANL, assuring them that she will return to the team soon.
“To Tigres fans concerned that I have not returned to Mexico, I will see you all again very soon and will continue to give my all for the shirt,” she said.
