Director General of the National Sports Commission Pledges Support for Swimming in Nigeria

Honorable Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has expressed his commitment to supporting swimming in Nigeria, emphasizing the NSC’s dedication to ensuring the country’s qualification for the upcoming Olympics.

 

This statement was made during a reception for the victorious junior swimming team that recently participated in the Africa Junior Swimming Championship in Egypt, marking Nigeria’s best performance ever at the event. The reception took place at the LOC Secretariat building in Abeokuta.

 

During the event, the DG announced that Abduljabal Adama would be inducted into the Elite Athletes Initiative in recognition of his outstanding performance at the championship, where he secured three gold medals and one bronze, making him the only athlete from a black African country to reach the podium.

 

In a show of appreciation, Honorable Bukola Olopade awarded Abduljabal Adama a cash prize of 5 million Naira. Additionally, he presented the rest of the team with 2 million Naira each and promised a special package for the coaches, Yellow Yeiyah and Labake Oririetan.

 

Chief Mrs. Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, President of the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, expressed gratitude to the DG for his generous support, stating, “Nigeria has never had it this good. This is just the beginning of more to come.” She highlighted that the team’s success was a result of significant investment by the parents and urged the government to increase efforts to discover more talents and achieve better results on the international stage.

 

The event was also attended by notable figures including Taiwo Oriss, Secretary of the Aquatic Federation; Alhaji Usman Dauda, Second Vice President; Chief Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu, Director of Grassroots Sports; Mrs. Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press; Dr. Kweku Tandon, Executive Secretary of the National Sports Festival; and the parents of the athletes.
