Akwa United came from a goal down to beat Ikorodu City 2-1 to claim their eleventh victory of the season to keep their hopes of beating the drop alive with three matches to the end of the current campaign.

The Matchday 35 crucial encounter which was decided at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium saw the visitors taking the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute of the game through Wisdom Ubani.

The Promise Keepers leveled the scores eleven minutes later through striker Uche Sebastian whose 30th minute glancing header off Osoba Kabir’s delivery from a corner kick found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Akwa United’s persistent pressure on their opponents paid off in the 76th minute when Osoba Kabir’s curling effort inside the box sailed into the top corner for his 5th league goal of the season. The 2-1 win earned coach Kennedy Boboye’s team all three points. They remained in 18th position on the log with 41 points with three matches to the end of the season.

The Promise Keepers went into the game in desperate need of all three points to continue their push away from the drop zone and also to have some bragging rights against Ikorodu City who have never won in Uyo. The visitors needed the maximum points to further boost their chances of securing a third place finish to feature in the CAF Confederation Cup competition for the first time in their history but it was Akwa United who gave their all to return to winning ways after going winless in their last three league games.

The 2021 league champions will turn their attention to their President Federation Cup quarter final fixture against Kwara United this weekend in Enugu before returning to their next league engagement which will be an away trip to Benin for a date with Bendel Insurance on matchday 36.
