Nigeria has been placed in Group B alongside Portugal, Canada, and China for the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, set to take place in Brno, Czechia, from July 12 to 20.
The draw, conducted by former Czech basketball stars Ivana Vecerova and Eva Viteckova, was held on Tuesday, with notable figures such as Czech Basketball Federation President Miroslav Jansta and FIBA Executive Committee member Carmen Tocala in attendance.
A total of 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four, with Nigeria facing tough competition in Group B. Fellow African representatives Mali are in Group C alongside France, Australia, and Brazil.
The tournament’s format ensures all 16 teams advance to the Final Phase, which will adopt a single-elimination structure starting from the Round of 16. Teams from Group A will compete against teams from Group B, while Group C will cross paths with Group D, based on group standings (1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd).
Defending champions USA, placed in Group A, will aim to secure an 11th title, having won the last three editions. The host nation, Czechia, will look to replicate their 2001 success when they lifted the trophy in Brno.
The full group-stage draw:
– Group A: USA, Israel, Hungary, Korea
– Group B: Nigeria, Portugal, Canada, China
– Group C: Australia, France, Brazil, Mali
– Group D: Spain, Czechia, Japan, Argentina
This tournament marks an exciting opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its basketball talent on the global stage, with hopes of progressing deep into the competition.
