Ajax striker Chuba Akpom has once again expressed his strong desire to represent Nigeria at the senior level, reaffirming his allegiance to the Super Eagles. The 28-year-old, who previously played for Arsenal and Middlesbrough and represented England at youth levels, switched his allegiance to Nigeria in 2019 but is yet to receive a call-up.

Akpom, who scored in Ajax’s 2-1 UEFA Europa League victory over Galatasaray, admitted the depth of Nigeria’s attacking options might be a factor. “Maybe there are a lot of good strikers already. But for the nation to progress, selection has to be based on merit. I’ve been waiting since 2019 and will keep working hard,” he said.

Addressing criticisms of dual-national players switching allegiance, Akpom explained that English-born players often represent England at youth levels due to a lack of early opportunities from Nigeria. He dismissed claims that they turn to Nigeria only after failing to meet England’s demands, emphasizing the strength of his Nigerian heritage.

“As a Nigerian, I want to wear the green-and-white jersey and make history. The naija blood is strong, and you can’t run from it,” Akpom added, hoping for an eventual opportunity to fulfill his dream.
